I have some wonderful news to share! Spijker Malbec 2024 has earned both a Gold medal and the title of Overall Winner at the recent Malbec Challenge.
Adding to the excitement, Spijker Malbec 2025 also received Gold ahead of its release. Having both vintages recognised makes this a particularly special moment in my Spijker & Bessie journey.
The judging panel’s enthusiasm for the category was infectious. During the tasting, pioneering winemaker Norma Ratcliffe exclaimed:
“I don’t know why we don’t make and drink more Malbec? This is delicious!”
Fellow judges Fiona McDonald and Suzanne Potgieter shared her excitement. Across the category, they celebrated bright fruit, intriguing spice, rounded textures and beautifully balanced tannins. Above all, the best examples stood out for their succulence and sheer drinkability.
It’s a lovely reminder of just how much South African Malbec has to offer, and I couldn’t be happier to see Spijker take the top honours.
